Borgir, Kopavogur

Borgir, Kópavogi

Borgir was protected as a natural monument in 1981. After a glacier retreated at the end of the ice age, approx. 10,000 years ago, Borgarholt was a skerry offshore. The ocean washed away the smaller stones but left low-lying basalt boulders that characterize the hill.

The natural monument covers an area of 2.8 ha, but around the protected area is a so-called boundary area that is 1.3 ha.
