Waste

A nation-wide programme on waste management has been issued for the years 2013-2024. The programme covers a detailed survey of current waste issues, both regarding the quantity of individual waste categories as well as the development of alternative ways of waste handling. It also includes a time frame aimed at the better use of natural resources and the minimisation of adverse effects of waste creation and management on the environment and public health.

Household management in Iceland is quite environment-friendly, thanks to good access to clean water, geothermal hot water and renewable natural resources for electricity production. Although we are fortunate in having access to clean resources, we must protect them, ensure their sustainable use and show them respect. There are many other things associated with household operations that can enhance the use of natural resources and the emission of greenhouse gases, such as the use and purchase of clothes, food, appliances, toys and other items for household use.
